Are you using film or video? If you have had your film telecined to disk as .avi 18fps (or another frame rate) then you'll need to convert it... I had to convert my 18fps files to 25fps in stream clip and then import them into my NLE (Final Cut Express). If you don't do this then after you've exported your finished projects you'll find all your edits are in the wrong place and at the wrong time in the export. You might already be aware of this, but I thought it worth mentioning, just incase you make the same mistake I did.
I think you can use compressor for FCP although I've never used it.
