Chicago Filmmakers Presents
The 22nd Onion City Experimental Film and Video Festival

June 17-20, 2010

Thursday, June 17 Gene Siskel Film Center (164 N. State St.)
8:00pm
Opening Night Program

A Letter to Uncle Boonmee (2009, 18 mins., video, Thailand): A haunting
memory-piece set in a small Thai village by acclaimed director Apichatpong
Weerasethakul.

Cry Me a River (2008 19 mins., video, China): Chinese master Jia Zhang-ke¹s
delicate tale of four former students who meet to celebrate the birthday of
their professor.

Ghost Algebra (2010, 8 mins., video, US): Janie Geiser¹s stunning animation
follows a woman on an unnamed quest through a mysterious landscape.

Trees of Syntax, Leaves of Axis (2009, 10 mins., 35mm, Canada): Daïchi
Saïto¹s gorgeous hand-processed 35mm film with a remarkable score by
violinist Malcolm Goldstein.

Beauty Plus Pity (2009, 14 mins., video, US/Canada): Emily Vey Duke and
Cooper Battersby combine found footage, original animation, and their usual
wry humor in this series of vignettes.

If There Be Thorns (2009, 13 mins., video, US): Michael Robinson fashions an
elusive tale of siblings through fragments from V.C. Andrews, William S.
Burroughs, Stevie Nicks, and others.

Podworka (2009, 31 mins., video, US): Directed by Sharon Lockhart. ³A
ubiquitous architectural element of the city, Lodz, Poland's courtyards act
as playgrounds for the children that live in the surrounding apartment
buildings. These spaces provide a sanctuary from the traffic and the
commotion of the city, but unlike the over-determined playgrounds of
America, the courtyards are still very much urban environments. In six
different courtyards throughout Lodz, parking lots, storage units, and metal
armatures become jungle gyms, sandboxes, and soccer fields. A series of
fleeting city-life interludes, Podwórka is both a study of a specific place
and an evocation of the resourcefulness of childhood.² (MoMA)
