India ink is great too. It dries really flat and it doesn't flake off, so it runs great through telecine (won't gum up projectors). It dries really fast, and it cracks when it dries, which is a really beautiful effect. Also, you can get it in virtually any color. Use patterned objects with it, paint with it. It's great.
