Scope is actually a slightly larger apeture than academy but yes the big problem would be the right projection lens.

Academy loses a bit on the top and bottom to keep the aspect ratio more like that of the silent aspect ratio in spite of the loss of the area on the film to the optical soundtrack.

However the Fox Movietone format was much like you describe and the old FW Munrau film "Sunrise" was originally shot in this format. If you can lay your hands on one of the recent DVD re-issues in the correct original aspect ratio, you can get a peek at what it looked like, and Sunrise is a great film anyway so theres two reasons for checking it out! :)
