Jean Nouvel, 2008 Pritzker Prize winner, is one of the most innovative and
unconventional architects of our time. He owes his fame to projects such as
the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, the Opera House in Lyon, the Cartier
Foundation Headquarters, as well as his spectacular design of the Tokyo
opera and the boldness of his "Endless Tower". This film casts a fresh,
explicit glance at the scope of this architect and his work as Nouvel
explains what architecture means to him with footage from ten of his most
recent creations. It is the portrait of a man who steadily confronts the
world, and moulds it according to his own philosophy.

The Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron (architects of the
Beijing National Stadium, or "Bird's Nest") were jointly awarded the 2001
Pritzker Prize, their profession's highest honor, for combining "the
artistry of an age-old profession with the fresh approach of a new century's
technical capabilities". Over the past twenty years they have been involved
in finding inventive architectural solutions to building a diverse range of
projects - domestic, municipal and commercial - from a modest switching
station for trains to a strikingly innovative approach to the design of a
winery. Their highest profile commission to date was the conversion of
London's giant Bankside power station into Tate Modern, acclaimed by their
peers, the media and the public alike. Visiting examples of Herzog and de
Meuron's ground-breaking style, this film reflects their capacity to
astonish and explore the way in which they transform what might otherwise be
ordinary shapes, materials and surfaces through new treatments and
techniques. Their perspective on and approach to architecture; their design
dialogue; the way their strengths and weaknesses complement each other; and
their collaborations with others, particularly artists, will all be brought
into focus to give a fascinating insight into the cutting edge of
architecture today.

The Tate Modern was opened to the public in London on May 12th 2000. The
new building is part of the Tate Gallery, the largest contemporary art
museum in the world. Sir Nicholas Serota, director of the Tate Gallery,
recalls his idea of turning the power station, which was built in various
stages by Sir Gilbert Scott between 1948 and 1963, into the Tate Modern.
The conversion of the disused power station, as designed by the Swiss
architects Herzog & de Meuron, was applauded by professionals and art lovers
alike. Starting from an electric power station running on gas oil they have
created an architectural masterpiece whose fame will be recognized well
beyond London. Thanks to the contribution of Jacques Herzog and Harry
Gugger, partners in the Herzog & de Meuron practice, the documentary
retraces some fascinating insights into the architecture of the Tate Modern.
Following this line of thinking one is bound to notice how significant even
an apparently unimportant detail can be for the work as a whole.

In 1935, Frank Lloyd Wright designed a country house for the Kaufmann family
over a small stream in Western Pennsylvania. He named it Fallingwater. It,
perhaps more than any other building, exemplifies Wright's concept of
'Organic Architecture, which seeks to harmonize people and nature by
integrating the building, the site, and its inhabitants into a unified
whole. And today, the iconic image of the house over the waterfall remains a
testament to a great architect working at the height of his career.

Disc One: Documentary Film Lynda Waggoner, Director of Fallingwater, along
with architectural historian, Richard Cleary, provide an in-depth look into
the creation of Fallingwater and the exceptional qualities which make it a
true American Masterpiece.

Future by Design is a documentary film by Academy Award nominated filmmaker
William Gazecki, sharing the life and far-reaching vision of Jacque Fresco,
a modern day Da Vinci. Peer to Einstein and Buckminster Fuller, Jacque is a
self-taught futurist who describes himself most often as a "generalist" or
multi-disciplinarian -- a student of many inter-related fields. He is a
prolific inventor, having spent his entire life (he is now 90 years old)
conceiving of and devising inventions on various scales which entail the use
of innovative technology. The film explores Fresco's world of the future,
where scientific method, not politics, rules world operations, and all human
activities and efforts are directed towards achieving dynamic equilibrium
between man and nature. Future by Design is a visually and intellectually
engaging exploration of one man's vision of a future where war is outdated,
there is no shortage of any necessary resource, and our focus as a species
is sustainability. But far from presenting a vision of Utopia, this
documentary demonstrates a "possible future" -- with real and viable
alternatives to our current paradigm of militarism and commercialism.
Jacque Fresco is an outspoken and immediately likable character who's
radical and sometimes irreverent ideas are sure to draw both praise and
controversy.

The VDL Research House was designed by architect Richard J. Neutra in 1932
and served as his studio and residence for the rest of his career. Uniquely
among his projects, it represented the three major phases of his aesthetic
development. It exemplified his early works, which featured compact volumes
in white or silver, with thin surfaces and bands of windows. The Garden
house built behind the VDL house in 1939 shows an emphasis on indoor/outdoor
living, with its large windows and deep overhangs, typical of his work in
the late 1930s and early 1940s. The original house was destroyed by fire in
1963 and rebuilt in 1966. Neutra's post-war work reflected his interest in
environmental design, seen in the VDL House II with its use of site and
climate responsive features.

Disc One: 40 min. documentary film on VDL 1 & 11 by Lauren Weiss Bricker,
PhD, Director, Archives - Special Collections, ENV Cal Poly Pomona and
Judith Sheine, Chair of Architecture, Cal Poly Pomona.

Appearances by Neutra's sons Dion and Raymond; historian, Thomas Hines;
and Neutra Associate, John Blanton.

Historical photographs by Julius Shulman.

2 extended interviews with Lauren Weiss Bricker and Judith Sheine.

Disc Two: Interactive Virtual Tour on CD-ROM [Windows / OSX] This
Interactive Virtual Tour utilizes an intuitive multi-referenced interface to
allow users self-directed experiences through a comprehensive collection of
photographs, 3600 VR panoramas, and drawings. It provides the most engaging
and comprehensive documentation of VDL I & II ever produced.

Over 75 historical and newly commissioned photographs and 17 VR panoramas.

Hi-Resolution viewing of archival drawings and Neutra's travel sketches.
