"you can layer in final cut, but the effect is not as saturated or intense
as film layers."
While video isn't as saturated or intense as film PERIOD, don't make the
mistake of layering in final cut by merely changing clip opacity. Composite
modes like screen and overlay, combined with color correction and the use of
opacity as a means to control resulting relationships when necessary, will
give you something more akin to the buildup and density of optical printing.
Merely reducing opacity on tracks often results in a very thin image.

Composite modes, speed changes (with frame blending off), blink, strobe, and
masks (the latter usually created in photoshop/ae/motion) together can
comprise something akin to a virtual J-K.
