Programming (in) Illegality:
a call to curators, outlaws, artists, agitators, theorists and others
in Vancouver and beyond

From Hungry Ghost

This city: so much steel and glass, so much confinement.

Vancouver’s cinematic and audio realms are so often stolen away from the
fabric of public space into theatres, bars and galleries. The texture of
urbanism is splayed throughout the works we see and present yet their format
cuts them off, buries them into sterile voids where like presents to like.
The question emerges, is it 'State-of-the-Art?' or 'Art-of-the-State?' The
stamp of official sanction is everywhere, even as the same bureaucracy
stifles independent and confrontational work that seeks to leave
well-trodden paths. Points of eruption are possible however earthquakes live
just below the surface, and the tension is rising.

Once the walls of the gallery and the cinema have fallen the entire city
becomes the surface for the work, as it has always been at the best moments
where time leaps outside of the clock and value and ego cease to play. We
are not talking light stuff here we are speaking of programming within and
through illegality, as a site and as a project.

The next summer season the Hungry Ghost will follow up on events like the
Animated-Bike In with a full season (June-September) of explicitly illegal
film programs, audio events and performance works from around the spinning
globe of contingency. All will occur under bridges, in abandoned buildings,
vacant lots and rooftops — without permission.

Why you might ask, because Vancouver’s breath stinks of decays stale rot,
the air of Olympic complacency is everywhere. Deep in the lightless realms
of the studio/alchemical lab the bolt-cutters are waiting for use. It is
time to begin planning.

As much as this fortress of solitude has its advantages such a project
cannot be done alone. Co-conspirators, shitworkers and ambitious programmers
are needed to set this spark to fire. If seriously interested get in contact
to participate in a meeting of this, soon to be formed, secret curatorial
society.

PS-“People who talk about revolution and class struggle without referring
explicitly to everyday life, without understanding what is subversive about
love and what is positive in the refusal of constraints, such people have a
corpse in their mouth.”
