I've always used dvd43free (now dvd43) at www.dvd43.com
It's pretty basic: a little face in your system tray smiles and turns
green when you pop in a dvd that is region encoded and that means you
can play/rip it, hooray. I've always liked it b/c of it's simplicity
and lack of useless options. that, and because it's free =)
