Hi all,

There's one point that hasn't been mentioned thus far. One reason (I think)
festivals charge a fee is to discourage people from sending in films that
they aren't serious about. There are usually too many submissions, and the
numbers can get really overwhelming if submission is free.

I personally don't think any of the submission fees go toward theatre rental
or paying artists; it goes to shipping, typing, paper, deck rental or
maintenance, office rental, and all the other stuff needed to log in tapes,
track them, and view them. Even paying curators a bit so they can make
enough time to watch everything. But I could easily be wrong on that last
point.

That all said, I don't think it's right to charge people to submit things
(besides the fee it costs the artist to make a dub and mail it to me), and
Filmforum doesn't charge anything. (And Filmforum isn't a "festival.") But
please don't send me anything right now - I'm rather behind in viewing, as I
have to work for a living.

Best regards,

Adam Hyman
Los Angeles Filmforum
