We can now disclose that Center for Visual Music (CVM) did indeed consult Malick regarding artists to create the abstract, experimental sequences for Malick's new film Tree of Life.

Here's a link to an interview with one of the artists we referred to Malick, Scott Nyerges, whose work was licensed. Note the line about getting paid:
"I got paid more money for licensing that one clip than I’ve ever been paid for ten years of filmmaking."

The only other comment we can make at this time is that yes, Malick did indeed borrow, purchase and study copies of Jordan Belson's films (that should be obvious...). Unfortunately it was not logistically or practically possible to hire Belson to create new work, under their outlined requirements for their production process.
