ok, i've been living abroad for awhile but i am returning to toronto sometime
next month. i hadn't heard that they finally coughed up the dough to get the
gate after all this time. they said it was too much and far down the priority
list. that's great that they got one! i'll get back in touch with you when i
get back to toronto. seeing as they now have the original, maybe it is possible
to do the mold and cast a few more for cineworks, mainfilm, etc.? we shall
see... in the meantime, if you do need to do some work then consider doing a
residency at lift or just fly out to toronto as i'm pretty sure cineworks
members can use lift's gear for up to 3 months consecutively without buying a
membership. alternatively, there are a few of us that know that machine. if
you need help then maybe one of us can do the blow-up for you? you sound like
you want to do it yourself but just so you know there are options if you get
into a bind. john kneller in toronto also has a custom built mitchell printer
for 8/s8 to 35 work.
another consideration for cineworks was that i know lift had a different lens
and lens mount machined to work on that printer specifically for the eventuality
of obtaining the super 8 gate. it may have been an extra grand or something?
anyway, best of luck. keep in touch.
andrew

ps. just got off the phone with one of the tech guys from lift and he says that
they still dont have the gate. shit! back to the drawing board. keep in mind
that they do have the other system i mentioned. it's definitely not as good as
what you are looking for but it does the trick...

Thanks Andrew, I've been working on Cineworks's (Vancouver) Oxberry for a
number of years shooting 16mm and 35mm. I've thought (in the past) about doing
something similiar with an animation stand but again.. no super 8 gate. I heard
that LIFT recently aquired a gate directly from Oxberry for five grand, which
for most of us, is not in the budget. (although that cost is
probably appropriate due to the amount of machining, time, engineering, and
labor!)

Good to know there's a bunch of us looking, if you get in touch with the guy
from the archieves let us know, we'd be interested for sure.

cj.
