The physical splicing illustrated here makes use of videotape "developer," a
fluid that was available until the early 1980s. It was a suspension of iron oxide
particles in a fast-evaporating (and carcinogenic) fluid. The "developer" offered
a stunning demonstration of the track patterns on videotape, making linear audio
tracks and the diagonal video tracks of helical scan recordings physically visible.
