Philip, there is a tank called a Morse G3 which works by pulling the film slowly through a reservoir of chemicals.

Some people love it , others not so much....but you do not have to break the film. There are a few important timing adjustments for (I think) the bleach part of b&w rev developing, since the fact that one is passing the film through the tank and not immersing the film in it changes a timing or two. There is plenty of chat online discusing this, so, it should not be too hard to pin down the numbers. (there was also a thread on the subject here, I think, too)
