From what I understand, the Oppo players need a hardware mod, if it's even doable.

On the other hand, the Momitsu BDP899 (and its many renamed/cloned derivatives from other companies) can be made blu-ray region-free with a remote code. Probably the most readily available 'clone' of the Momitsu at the moment is the Sherwood BDP-5004.

You enter in a code on the remote: 9735DB where D is your desired DVD region and B is your desired bluray region (where A=1, B=2, C=3). So to have region-free DVD and region B bluray playback, you would enter in 973502. Once the player is powered down, it defaults back to region A for bluray, but remembers DVD as region 0. The player also does upscaling from standard DVD to 1080p over HDMI (not sure about component) and converts PAL to NTSC.

It's true that region-free BD players are less common at the moment than region-free DVD players, but by no means are they particularly hard to obtain if you know which ones to look for. Videohelp as someone else mentioned is a good resource.

Many manufacturers who had made region-free, or easily converted to region-free, DVD players are not doing that with their Blu-ray players. Oppo, known for reference quality players at reasonable prices, players that converted between PAL and NTSC, and could easily be made region-free, now require firmware mods, or physical mods, to be region-free. One reliable source for modified players is JVB Digital.
