1. I am reminded of the color tinted film stocks which were used in
the early days. I imagine they were permanently in the base as well.
Have you ever seen the chart with all the colored bases that were
once available?
Your point is well taken about loading print stocks in camera. Much
of my film Okeanos was shot with color print stock which had to be
carefully spooled and loaded. I simply put a piece of that orange
backing film in the Bolex filter slot and ended up with film with a
speed of about ASA 1 or so. This way I was treating the "world out
there" as my color negative and thus making a print of it. Greens
made a wonderful red etc. Negative colors, a whole other palette.

A second thought in regards to this area of discussion comes to mind
if one wants to use some hopelessly out of date and otherwise useless
kodachome processed as B&W neg.
from my notes to myself:

"Removing the backing (either wet or dry -- experiment) Needs some
kind of alkaline solution and a soft sponge or roller of some kind,
perhaps rig the Morse tank. Try ammonia, denatured alchohol (campers
lamp fuel (?)), Check Ace Hardware, Windex, etc. test with short
piece of film and Q-tip to find a good method"

2. Yes Maclaren et al. I remember years ago seeing images of his
card index and the various visual configurations cataloging a variety
of "noises" he would paint directly on the soundtrack. I was more
referring to the extent of obliteration to an already existing track,
which, if its anything like the visual image, will hold up remarkably
in terms of how we cognitively process the remaining bits of
information, that is to say, you could possibly paint and scratch out
99+% of a track and still be able to make out something of the
narration or music or whatever, in any case I want to explore this
with an ear toward some possible new musical synthesis ala "Musique
Concrete". Even that, I'm sure, may have been done, but I don't get
out much, and what I don't know, cannot keep me from the fun of
playing with this.
