The Rape of Europa

A Menemsha Films Release

The Rape of Europa tells the epic story of the systematic theft, deliberate
destruction and miraculous survival of Europe's art treasures during the
Third Reich and World War II.

In a journey through seven countries, the film takes the audience into the
violent whirlwind of fanaticism, greed, and warfare that threatened to wipe
out the artistic heritage of Europe. For twelve long years, the Nazis looted
and destroyed art on a scale unprecedented in history. But heroic young art
historians and curators from America and across Europe fought back with an
extraordinary campaign to rescue and return the millions of lost, hidden and
stolen treasures.

The Rape of Europa begins and ends with the story of artist Gustav Klimt's
famed Gold Portrait, stolen from Viennese Jews in 1938 and now the most
expensive painting ever sold. Today, more than sixty years later, the
legacy of this tragic history continues to play out as families of looted
collectors recover major works of art, conservators repair battle damage,
and nations fight over the fate of ill-gotten spoils of war. Joan Allen
narrates this breathtaking chronicle about the battle over the very survival
of centuries of western culture.

"Provocative masterpiece..."

-- Carrie Rickey, Philadelphia Inquirer

"A must-see film...It's hauntingly unforgettable"

-- Masha Leon, The Forward

Design 2

A Facets Video Release

Re-think the 20th century through six design concepts that shaped our
history. The Bookworm, Concorde, Conica coffeemaker, Leica camera, Eames
lounge chair, and Vespa scooter not only reflect the era that produced them
but they also anticipated the future. DESIGN 2 explores the development and
concept of each of these archetypal products while examining the larger
social context. Combining archival images and film excerpts with music, this
companion documentary to our earlier release DESIGN(DV94245), outlines the
social, political, and cultural climate in which each item was invented.

Using a contemporary style and narration, DESIGN 2 is hip, fun, and
informative.

Rothko's Rooms

A Kultur Films Release

The Life and Works of an American Artist A Kultur Films Release In the late
1940s and '50s, Mark Rothko (1903-70) was one of the leading American
artists who created wall-scale abstract paintings that filled the viewer's
field of vision and became a form of environment. Rothko spoke of wanting
the spectator to feel inside the pictorial space, enveloped in his canvases'
luminous color and apparitional surfaces. Together with painters such as
Barnett Newman and Clyfford Still, he wanted to express a sense of the
sublime, an idea associated with religious awe, vastness and natural
magnificence.

Filmed on both sides of the Atlantic, this documentary chronicling Rothko's
life and charting the development of his work fills the screen with his
softly defined, rectangular clouds of color stacked symmetrically on top of
one another: a visual language conceived to evoke elemental emotions with
maximum poignancy. There are penetrating contributions from his daughter,
Kate, and his son, Christopher, and comments from a wide range of friends,
artists, art historians, collectors and curators.

The focus is on Rothko's demands for the perfect setting for the showing of
his work, an ideal he pursued throughout his creative life, typified by the
story of his iconic Seagram murals, nine of which now hang in a dedicated
room at London's newly-opened Tate Modern. One of the murals' commissioners,
architect Philip Johnson, is among those who explain why Rothko refused to
allow these works to hang in their intended venue, the exclusive Four
Seasons restaurant in New York.

Alice Neel

An Arts Alliance America / Arthouse Films Release

Alice Neel (1900-1984), one of the great portrait painters of the 20th
century, reinvented the genre by expressing the inner landscape of her
subjects, who included luminaries such as Andy Warhol, Bella Abzug, and
Allen Ginsberg as well as her neighbors in Spanish Harlem.

Directed by her grandson, Andrew Neel, this very personal film captures her
struggles as a female artist, a single mother, and a painter who defied
convention. With unlimited access to photos, video, art, and letters, Neel
reveals a portrait of the artist consistent with the themes of intimacy,
family, and survival that were so central to her work.

"The fascinating documentary Alice Neel illuminates history while also
demonstrating how an artist's style reveals his or her personality."

-- Mark Zoller Seitz, New York Times
