Two pretty good sources:
David E. James, "Film Diary/Diary Film" in TO FREE THE CINEMA (Princeton, 1992)
Michael Renov, THE SUBJECT OF DOCUMENTARY (Minnesota, 2004) is good on taxonomies, situating the diary film in relation to what he calls "new autobiography."
