We're doing tests with different codecs; H264 seems promising.
Different films require different strategies. I was using Jeff
Scher's "Yours" as a litmus test for DVD compression (this always
confounded the technicians). For Blu-Ray tests, I have HDCam-SR
transfers of a Rose Lowder film, Mekas' Walden, Brakhage's
Anticipation of the Night, some Gunvor Nelson, and these are all good
tests for compression quality. I'm waiting for it all to come
together before launching titles in HD.
