Over the years a number of very clever methods were used to get around this
non-reflex problem.

Here's a newer one. Get a small, high intensity light source. In darkness,
shine it through the gate from inside the camera, set up on the copy stand.
Place a white title card in front of the camera. You need a strong enough source
to project the light squarely onto the card. The outlines it makes are the
outlines of your title area. You're just doing it in reverse.

Trying to figure out how to shoot titles using a copy stand with my 8mm
camera. Since there isn't reflex viewing I know there has to be some
adjustment made to keep the titles centered.
