In response to William Wees and the term Underground Film, this is what Ken
Jacobs told me a few months ago. I hope Ken doesn't mind me putting this
here!

"I came up with the term Underground Film in the
Fifties, when I was filming the outrageous Jack Smith and thinking of
the WW2 political underground, the Resistance. I was surprised to
see the expression one day on an art- theater marquee advertising a
show of Vanderbeek's films. We didn't know each other then but had a
mutual friend. But I never did get around to asking him directly had
the friend passed it on to him."
