To be even more technical about this: Tongues Untied had the historical luck
to have been distributed within a relatively small window of time (early to
mid 90s?) in which 16mm prints were made of video works‹mostly
documentaries‹for the purposes of theatrical screenings and distribution. I
have in fact seen a strange VHS bootleg of Riggs¹ work made from such a
print‹a video-to-film-to-video transfer. I find the visual texture of these
video-to-16mm films to be quite beautiful now, even if at the time they
merely looked ³necessary.²
