DIVERSIONS: A FESTIVAL OF EXPERIMENTAL FILM AND VIDEO8-11 MAY 2008FILMHOUSE, EDINBURGH
Edinburgh's first experimental film festival runs over four days and includes over 50 short, medium and feature-length films, from historical classics to new works from the US, Britain and France.
This year's highlight is a PETER ROSE RETROSPECTIVE (Saturday 10th, 6pm). Peter will be coming over from Philadelphia to show a selection of film and video works, including The man who could not see far enough, Secondary Currents, Pneumenon, Omen, Odysseus in Ithaca and his most recent Studies in Transfalumination. He'll also be giving a talk entitled "The Apostrophes of Dimension: films and videos by Peter Rose" at the University of Edinburgh on Friday 9th May at 11am.
Other special guests include PIP CHODOROV, who will be presenting 'OUTSIDE THE BOX: A HISTORY OF PLAYING WITH FRAMES' (Thursday 8th, 6pm), a mini historical overview of experimental film, including works by Hans Richter, Oscar Fischinger, Peter Kubelka, Paul Sharits, Stan Brakhage, Maurice Lemaitre, Friedl Kubelka, Olivier Fouchard, plus Chodorov's latest film Faux Mouvements.
FREDERIQUE DEVAUX will also be here (Saturday 10th, 3.15pm), to present some of her own works, as well as a selection of her favourites, including Dimly Lit Room, a live film performance by SAMI VAN INGEN.
Other festival highlights include a focus on MAY 68 (Sunday 11th, 1pm and 3pm), featuring Le Soulèment de la jeunesse (Maurice Lemaitre, 1968), Détruisez-vous (Serge Bard, 1968) and Cinétracts (Chris Marker et al, 1968), and a section entitled SCENES FROM NEW YORK, with films by Joel Schlemowitz, M.M. Serra and Jennifer Reeves.
