I think it was some film professor somewhere. Did he ever get an answer?
 
The simple one is: it depends upon the number of blades in the projector
shutter, their degree of coverage of the full shutter rotation, and the
quickness of the film pulldown.
 
It's more light than dark-- figure the blades cover the light beam anywhere
between approximately 28 to 36 or so percent of the time. Some projectionists
shave down the blades to get more light on the screen, but there's a limit to
 that. The blade sectors need to be able to cover the complete pulldown in
order to prevent ghosting.
