Tape is pretty dead. Minidisc is the closest, and many like it --
they are cheap -- but the new flash-based recorders are very small
and pretty good -- there are several in the $300-400 range, many with
phantom mic power. No need for hard disks for audio -- the files are
small. The B&H catalog or website might be a starting point for you,
as well as trewaudio.com.
Rob Danielson at UW-Milwaukee is a big MD fan, and probably will pipe
in with recommended models.
