Try Thierry Groensteen's book The System of Comics, translated from
the French by Bart Beaty,
from Univ of Mississippi Press. A semiotic treatment.
(oh, I see that Jim Flanneery has already suggested this...)
I want to say that John Fell has written about Winsor McKay (who
created Little Nemo and
Gertie the Dinosaur) and the connections between comics and film.
Perhaps in Film Before Griffith?
There might be a little more about MCkay and cinema form in
Daydreams & Nightmares (Fantagraphics, reprinted 2005?)...
