It's much easier to remove the backing AFTER processing.
 
In fact, to do so before would make it difficult, if not impossible, for it
to be loaded onto a reel for hand developing. It'll turn to slippery mush and
stick.
 
And that's the least of the problems. For one thing, you can't see what you
are doing.
 
Definitely NOT recommended.
