Moira--

Not to knock buying used, but the first thing I'd do is see if I can
find a new, affordable laptop with one of these recommended
graphics/video cards (from avid's requirements page):

     * NVIDIA QuadroFX 1500M
     * NVIDIA Quadro FX 350M
     * NVIDIA Quadro FX Go1400
     * ATI Mobility FireGL V5200
     * ATI Mobility Fire GL V5000
     * ATI Mobility Radeon X600

Other cards may work. Before I buy, the "test" I try to meet is can I
find another happy user with the same hardware and software. This is
where the Users Forum is valuable.
http://www.avid.com/exchange/forums/14/ShowForum.aspx When I search
the SONY VIAO PCG-GRT's card, "NVIDIA GeForce4 420" into the users
discussion forum, there is some evidence of the card working, but
maybe with some performance compromise and a driver change. Anyone
can join the forum. There are so many factors that the forum is often
better than talking to a sales rep. Rob D.
