Frameworkers (Chicagoans, specifically),

Some of these shows are sold out already (Friday night, for example). And,
attaining tickets is awkward, as tickets are not available at the shows. The
Siskel asks that you obtain them in advance. Nevertheless, I've seen a lot
of this work, and--I promise-- it is great!!!

SAIC press people say:
Join us for two days of presentations by graduating BFA and MFA students
from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, highlighting the best and
brightest emerging talents working in film, video, and audio. Productions in
hand-drawn computer animation, 16mm film, and digital video plus a range of
genres provide an exciting and provocative look into the hearts and minds of
this year’s graduates. Program details and full schedule will be available
at the Box Office.
Admission is free. Tickets may only be obtained through the box office
during regular box office hours.

Samantha Olschan, Mysterieuse
2007, animation (Computer-generated), sound, color, 3 min. 15". When a local
girl is seduced by the arrival of an enigmatic leopard she is left with more
than memory. "Mysterieuse" is a computer generated animation deeply
influenced by traditional myth, as well as collage and printmaking
techniques.

Kathleen Ruffalo, Many Janes
2007, DV, sound, color, 27 min. Many Janes is an adaptation of a story that
revolves around a man who experiences love and loss through four different
women. Ms. Ruffalo's intention is to examine the resilience of love in one
man's life, and how this relates to everyone.

Katie Lauffenburger, Cry, Baby
2007, DV, sound, color, 6 min.15 Tragedies are so often reported in today's
media that the general public would have almost no emotional response. Katie
Lauffenburger's computer animation, created using After Effects, explores
this isolation and detachment within the framework of suburban life and
relationships.

Sean Seung W. Kang, In Between
2007, DV, sound, color, 8 min. It's a visual diary expressing lingering
feelings about my own existence stuck in between places, relationships,
memories, and times.

Chairmaine Bee, Finding,
2007, super 8 transferred to DV, 8 min.30" Finding is a personal documentary
which explores the idea of the quest and search for identity impacting
people of African descent living in the United States. A journey is set out
on to travel to countries While in search of answers surrounding identity
and spirituality in countries through out the African Diaspora such as
Brazil and Jamaica, the film maker begins to understand that it is
unnecessary to travel to a place outside of herself and the United States to
connect with African ' cultural retentions' but that they are quite
prevalent in her history in the United States and as a descendent of the Sea
Islands.

Nina Foufa, Birds
2007, film transferred to video, sound, b/w. 6 min.
The Birds is a meditative piece made of hi-con film. I try to reveal the
quality of the moment, where each detail becomes whole and self-contained.
The sound, which can also stand by itself, describes more of the flying
experience.

experimental documentary on the Eisenhower Interstate System and Defense
Highways. Steel focuses on relationship to foreign oil dependency and the
apathy and lack of
community and concern it imposes on the American people

Sherwin Ovid, Diamond Sidewalks
2007, DV, sound, color, 15 min.
As the debate of urban space culminates in light of its depleting
availability, systemic changes have propelled an insatiable market fixated
on reclamation and expansion. This examination accentuates the mechanistic
apparatus of unbridled capital in a belligerent quest to cannibalize the
lowest common denominator.

Martine Syms, What Happens When We Stop Being People
2007, DV, sound, color, 7 min. 33" Martine Syms is interested in what
happens when people stop being polite and start getting real.

Ernest Ramon, The Rumour Of Outer Space
2007, DV, sound, color, b/w, 24 min. A documentary/"B" sci-fi
flick/psychodrama: Physicist Ed Duncan/Al Bielek finds himself in the year
3804 trapped in a mind control camp on Mars. Will blind love spell triumph
for the human race? Or will the trappings of the mind conquer all?

2007, 16mm to video, work in-progress,sound, color, 15 min. An experimental
animation that wants to be a romantic comedy, this musical-in-progress
tackles eternal love and modern culture.
Samantha Olschan, Tri
2007, animation (3D/2D), sound, color, 6 min. When a three-legged girl is
abandoned at a sideshow parking lot, she encounters a one-legged ex-circus
strongman. They are strangers forced on the fringe of society forming a
family; hungry, lost and lying just to keep one other. This excerpt from the
12 minute °ßtri combines traditional 2D and 3D computer generated animation.

Land of heart's desire, Paradise
Dear western isle, gleaming in sunlight.
Land of heart's desire, Paradise.
Far the cloudless sky stretches blue
Across the isle, green in the sunlight. . .

Basia Goszczynska, Land Escape
2007, DV, sound, color, 6 min. 36". This puppet animation, set in a
landscape built from found objects, introduces a series of characters who
are soon to be deeply affected by the decaying of their land. When complete,
Land escape will feature outside observers. These observes, creatures of a
different nature, are
able to prevent the land's further escapement but choose to do nothing.

Seung Suk Nam, Kiki and Godot
2007, DV, color, sound, 18 min.
The Nomadic Project: A series of five films all set in the year 2048.
Each film is a love story in a different international city.
It is 2048 and the world is divided into five unions. Kiki and Godot
are ex-terrorists, whose memories have been erased. They struggle tolive
normal lives, but learn that they cannot survive without money.

Nina Foufa, Some flash back
2007, Photographs transferred to video, sound, b/w, 5 min.
Some flash back: a visual poem. Inspired by the collection of poems "Some
Thing Black", by Jacques Roubaud, where the poet grieves and mourns over the
loss of his wife. The wandering of a person in a seemingly empty space where
life still exists.

Lori Felker, 101
2006, DV, sound, color & b/w, 11 min. 101 is a celebration of the varying
levels of audience participation. A simple structure guides you through the
multiple levels upon which the viewer, the film and the filmmaker meet and
"interact".

PROGRAM 4: Thunder gods and sailors

Ben Popp, Kenny Reed, Sailors on Belmont Part 1.
2007, 16mm transferred to DV, color and b/w., 20 min.21"
Thunder god sends forth a vessel to transverse through the heart of
Noitanigami. Bound on this two year voyage, the crew document their
surroundings with cameras.

Sailors on Belmont Part 2.
2007, 16mm transferred to DV, color and b/w., 18 min. 28"
The world begins to skew as things take on a life of their own. Supplies are
limited and they have to make full use of all resources available.
*Special note: Rum soaked Ronny gave me the evil eye, I fear he may want to
kill me.The spirits are becoming restless.

Sailors on Belmont Part 3.

The shrill howling winds coming from the east sound li the screams of the
dead tonight. My shipmates huddle together in fear, but I find myself
calmed by the aesthetic. Something draws us further into this fragmented
reality.Rum soaked Ronny smells like he wet his sleeping bag.

i believe we have entered the heart of a pixalated core. It burns when I
churn my asphixiated turn. Stumbling drunken perverts within I report to the
skeleton. I believe it has begun. I believe...

Aaron Sallfertorr, The Sea In Your Eyes
2007, 16mm edited for digital video format, 27 min. This is the story of a
mother-son relationship damaged by the loss of the father figure. "The Sea
In Your Eyes" is a film about desire, frustration, taboo and hypocrisy in US
society as seen by an outsider. Aaron Sallfertorr is a Brazilian writer and
social scientist who has for the last five years pursued a BFA degree with
emphasis on Film at SAIC. In this body of work, Sallfertorr combines
character psychological studies with sadistic humor.
Nina Foufa, This is what I want
2007, Photographs transferred to video, sound, color, 4 min. A woman
exposes her naked body in a personal ad, seeking other women to have sex
with. Broken body pieces that resemble the movements of the shadowbox
theatre puppets. A comment on the self-objectification of a woman looking
for sex

photo negatives.

Nicholas Royce O'Brien, Pulcera
2007, Super 8 and 16mm transferred to DV, 27 min.Where does one
differentiate between memory and remembering? How does one visualize their
past critically? How does our memory lie to us, and how do we embrace those
fictions? Pulcera attempts to distinguish and then deconstruct these
metaphorical spaces between a father and son, both vested in the inquiry of
what time does to our senses.

2007, DV, 4min. 30".The character in Katie Lauffenburger's puppet animation
seeks to fill a personal void caused by a lack of comfort and meaningful
relationships. Viewers bear this burden and realize that feelings of loss
and hopelessness can be never-ending and ubiquitous.

2007, Digital Video/Animation (Computer-generated), sound, color
1 min.12" We are no longer able to touch the things we create. Grasses made
from plastic and electricity, winds from math and skies from time. And we
still find a way to feel them.

Inspired by Hans Anderson's fairy tale "The Little Mermaid", this movie is
an experiment exploring love, memory and female identity.

portraying the path of the unfinished, the failed, the finite and the
infinite.
