ZANZIBAR
The ZANZIBAR Films and the Dandies of May 1968

Made in the period around May 1968 by a dozen rebels whose undisputed
leader was Philippe Garrel, the Zanzibar Films fall within a “wild
innocence” that is striking as much for its violence as well as for its
lucidity. The author reveals the truth on one of the most surprising
experiences in the history of French cinema.

The Group of films produced under the flag of Zanzibar has been for me the
greatest discovery in French cinema. It’s a group of films that nobody
seriously interested in cinema can afford to miss. It’s an exciting bridge
between the Nouvelle Vague and the avant-garde, between poetry and
narrative. None of these films has lost anything in time: just the
opposite. They have grown in their intensity of personal, poetic and
cinematic vision.
