The Third Annual Festival of Improvised Music and Moving Image (IMMI

silent film, freely improvised music and progressive video, all melded

Chan, Noah Phillips, and Jordan Glen whose work together is an evocation
of alternative timbres informed by the immediacy of physical gesture in
live performance. Trombonist Scott Thomson, a key member of the thriving
Toronto improvisation scene, will join The Three Pipes in Eugene.
Festival highlights include experimental short video works as well as
classic silent films accompanied by a live improvisation. The classic

 PRIX JEAN VIGO
Created in 1951 and awarded annually, the Prix Jean Vigo was established
in the name of the French filmmaker who made his indelible mark with
Zéro de conduite and L'Atalante before his death at the age of
twenty-nine. In a yearlong tribute to the award and the filmmakers it
has honored, the Department of Film presents works by past winners. All
films are in French with English subtitles, unless otherwise noted.
Organized by Véronique Godard, Prix Jean Vigo Committee; and Jytte
Jensen, Curator, and Leigh Goldstein, Executive Assistant, Department of
Film. Grateful thanks for the advice of the current Prix Jean Vigo
Committee and its President, Luce Vigo, and for the generous
collaboration of the Consulate General of France, New York; the Cultural
Services of the French Embassy, New York; and for their invaluable
support of our subtitling efforts, Titra-Film and Alex Kuczynski.
Remparts d'argile (Ramparts of Clay). 1970. France/Algeria. Directed by
Jean-Louis Bertucelli. Screenplay by Jean Duvignaud. With Leila Schenna.
A young Tunisian woman wordlessly revolts against her community. Working
from Duvignaud's book about the backbreaking labor and daily habits of a
Tunisian salt-mining community, Bertucelli filmed on location in
Tehouda, a village in southern Algeria. 87 min. Enfants des courants
d'air.1959. France. Directed by Edouard Luntz. The lonely life of a boy
living on the degraded outskirts of Paris. 24 min. Thursday, December 7,

ESSENTIAL CINEMA: STAN BRAKHAGE: THE PITTSBURGH TRILOGY
EYES (1970, 36 minutes, 16mm, silent) After wishing for years to be
given-the-opportunity of filming some of the more "mystical" occupations
of our Times – some of the more obscure Public Figures which the average
imagination turns into "bogeymen"... viz.: Policemen, Doctors, Soldiers,
Politicians, etc.: – I was at last permitted to ride in a Pittsburgh
police car, camera in hand, the final several days of September 1970 –
this opportunity largely due to the efforts of a Pittsburgh newspaper
photographer, Mike Chikiris – who was sympathetic to my film show at The
Carnegie Institute and responded to my wish as stated on that occasion –
therefore pleaded my "cause" eloquently with Police Inspectors of his
acquaintance: my thanks to him, to Sally Dixon of The Carnegie Institute
and to the Policemen who created the situation that made this film
  possible. (S.B.); DEUS EX (1971, 34 minutes, 16mm, silent) I have been
many times very ill in hospitals; and I drew on all that experience
while making DEUS EX in West Penn. Hospital of Pittsburgh; but I was
especially inspired by the memory of one incident in an emergency room
of San Francisco's Mission District: while waiting for medical help, I
had held myself together by reading an April-May 1965 issue of "Poetry
Magazine": and the following lines from Charles Olson's "Cole's Island"
had especially centered the experience, "touchstone" of DEUS EX, for me:
Charles begins the poem with the statement "I met Death –" And then: "He
didn't bother me, or say anything. Which is / not surprising, a person
might not, in the circumstances; / or at most a nod or something. Or
they would. But they wouldn't, / or you wouldn't think to either, / it
was Death. And / He certainly was, the moment I saw him." The film
begins with this sense of such an experience and goes on to envision the
whole battle of hospital on these grounds, thru to heart surgery seen as
equivalent to Aztec ritual sacrifice... the lengths men go to avoid so
simple and straight a relationship with Death as Charles Olson managed
on/in "Cole's Island." (S.B); THE ACT OF SEEING WITH ONE'S OWN EYES
(1971, 32 minutes, 16mm, silent) "…Stan Brakhage, entering, with his
camera, one of the forbidden, terrific locations of our culture, the
autopsy room. It is a place wherein, inversely, life is cherished, for
it exists to affirm that no one of us may die without our knowing
exactly why. All of us, in the person of the coroner, must see that, for
ourselves, with our own eyes. It is a room full of appalling particular
intimacies, the last ditch of individuation. Here our vague nightmare of
mortality acquires the names and faces of others. This last is a process
that requires a witness; and what 'idea' may finally have inserted
itself into the sensible world we can still scarcely guess, for the
camera would seem to be the perfect Eidetic Witness, staring with
perfect compassion where we can scarcely bear to glance." (Hollis
Frampton); Total running time: ca. 102 minutes.

 POTO AND CABENGO
  POTO AND CABENGO (Jean-Pierre Gorin, USA/GERMANY 1979, 75')  A
documentary about the six year old twins, Gracie and Ginny Kennedy, who
appear to be speaking their own language. Linguists and the media are
excited and the girls become stars, until it is revealed that their own
language is a pidgin mix of their father's English and their mother's
German. Gorin's investigative presence, acting as a counter-balance to
the news coverage, gives the film its edge. He presents an unflinching
portrait of a fragmented American dream. Part of our yearlong
interdisciplinary library exhibit, the screenings are a celebration of
the public library, and The Donnell Media Center's incredible
circulating 16mm film collection at NYPL. Programmed by Jeanne Liotta
  for Proteus Gowanus.

THOM ANDERSEN PRESENTS NEW VIDEO WORK BY WILLIAM E. JONES
Filmforum's continues its Celebration of its 30th Anniversary with Thom
Andersen presenting New Video work by William E. Jones Ninth in a
series! William E. Jones's new body of work was inspired by his parallel
career in the gay adult video industry. In the course of viewing
hundreds of hours of porn, he has developed a fascination with its
marginalia: establishing shots revealing urban landscapes of the recent
past, charmingly inept dialogue scenes, and close-ups of performers,
many now dead. This material, while of no particular commercial use, can
be seen as an invaluable document of a lost world of eroticism and
sociability. The show includes "v. o." (video, color, 59 minutes, 2006),
"More British Sounds" (video, color, 8 minutes, 2006), and "Film
Montages (for Peter Roehr)" (video, color, 11 minutes, 2006)

 MEDIASCOPE 2006
Dedicated to experimentation with cinematic form and content, MediaScope
presents emerging and recognized artists who discuss their work with the
audience. The program explores filmmaking and videomaking, as well as
Web-based, installation, and digital art practices. Organized by Sally
Berger, Assistant Curator; Jytte Jensen, Curator; Laurence Kardish,
Senior Curator; and Joshua Siegel, Assistant Curator, Department of
Film; and Barbara London, Associate Curator, Department of Media.
MediaScope is supported by Jennifer McSweeney. Special thanks to First
Run Features. An Evening with Ou Ning. Guangzhou/Beijing documentarian
and graphic designer Ou Ning discusses The DaZhaLan Project (2005–06),
produced with artist Cao Fei. The video portrays Qianmen—one of the last
remaining historic quarters of Beijing, which sits just south of
Tiananmen Square and is a vestige of traditional Chinese life—and
follows the city's urbanization process, tracing conflicts caused by the
imbalance between modernization and tradition. Qianmen residents, the
artists, and crew reflect change in the face of the vast demolition and
building projects leading up to the 2008 Olympics. 90 min.

 AUDIO VERITE: THE HOBART VARIATIONS
Our Audio Vérité series usually dips into the copious collection of
reel-to-reel recordings and other aural finds that are squirreled away
at Anthology. For this very special event we will focus on the
fluctuation of sound and image in the work of Joseph Cornell. We tend to
think of films – even avant-garde classics – as having fixed
soundtracks, but some are actually quite flexible. Joseph Cornell played
records from his collection with his films, occasionally even using
different music, so that no two screenings were identical. Working from
some of the alternative musical variations outlined in his personal
notes, this show will demonstrate some of the possible mutations that
exist for his found-footage masterpiece ROSE HOBART (1936). We will also
examine the soundtrack suggestions for other of his films. In addition,
rare Cornell-related audio from our vault will be played for the first
time. And, we will see and hear Composer-In-Residence John Zorn's
thrilling soundtrack variations on Cornell's THE MIDNIGHT PARTY, as
performed at a live concert at Anthology. Happy Birthday, Joseph
Cornell! This Audio Vérité event is presented with the assistance of
Bradley Eros and Jeanne Liotta, researchers of Cornell's film
  collection.

Jersey City, New Jersey: Urban Image Showcase
http://www.urbanimageshowcase.org
6:00PM, Jersey City Museum, 350 Montgomery Street

TRUTH, LIES, SECRETS - FILM/VIDEO SHOWCASE
TRUTH, LIES, SECRETS a showcase of short films and video works by New
Jersey City University students and alumni curated by URBAN IMAGE, a
collective of media artists based at the University, will premiere on
Thursday, December 14, at 6:00PM at the Jersey City Museum, 350
Montgomery Street in Jersey City. Admission is free. Street parking is
readily available. Mining the depths of the artistic imagination, the
work featured in TRUTH, LIES, SECRETS explores what may be true or
false, confessional, diaristic, unknown, or hidden. The showcase
includes documentary, satire, personal narrative, and experimental
mixed-media works. Following opening remarks by Jane Steuerwald, an NJCU
professor of media arts and program coordinator, the screenings will
begin at 6:15PM. A question and answer session with the artists will
follow. NOISE IN MIND by Yutaka Ueda of New York City is a visually
stunning experimental piece that poses some of the central questions to
human existence. Through the masterful integration of sound and image
the artist leads viewers to consider the profound questions that have
been asked by every generation and every culture since the beginning of
time. LIFE AFTER DEATH by Summer Wosu of Jersey City defies the
conventions of science and life by proving that death is not the end of
life but rather the beginning. The mind of the main character doubles as
a battleground and canvas for this war against the finite nature of
death. TRANSMISSION by Rick Torres of Jersey City explores the HIV AIDS
epidemic and its effect on Hudson County residents. Professionals in
local organizations share their experiences with the never-ending battle
to help their patients despite limited resources. This powerful
documentary also explores the stigma associated with HIV testing,
possible cures, sex and abstinence education, and the incredible costs
of medications. D-INFORMATION by Louis Libitz of Syracuse, NY is an
experimental piece that examines the proliferation of digital technology
in the 21st century and explores the process of acquiring, consuming,
and processing digital information and visual data. FOCUS by Jimmy
Santiago of Nutley, NJ delivers an intensely personal story through
satire and metaphor. The central story focuses on the artists countless
humiliations because of his learning disability. In this exceptionally
unique narrative, dolls, slow-tracking shots, and references to horror
films are used to transfix the audience and draw it into the artists
mind. TRISHOLOGY 101 by Patricia Gonzalez of Union City, NJ is a glimpse
into some of the most life-changing events of the artists life.
Flashbacks experienced after a fainting spell, are dramatized in this
powerful and personal piece. Some of these vivid memories have been
buried for years and others are present in her life every day. TWO WEEKS
AGO I GOT A TATTOO by Juneyup Yi of New York City is an award-winning
documentary short that explores the motivation, process, and artistry of
a black dragon tattoo commissioned by a young Slovakian man in New York
City. I by Sonya Davidova of Jersey City is a work that features a Slam
poem written specifically for the piece, and explores the notions of
family and blood, the idea of an oceans worth of separation, and the
tears that result from certain emotional states, all related to water.
Founded in the fall of 2004, URBAN IMAGE provides opportunities for
emerging artists from the NJCU Media Arts Department to screen their
work at arts venues throughout New Jersey. TRUTH, LIES, SECRETS will
also be screened at the Margaret Williams Theater, NJ City University,
on Thursday evening, February 8th, 2007 and will travel to the Hoboken
Historical Museum in the spring of 2007.

PRIX JEAN VIGO - DIS-MOI QUE JE RêVE (MOONCALF).

UNESSENTIAL CINEMA PRESENTS: WHAT IS ON SHELF #510?
Anthology's on-site cold vault contains more than 9,000 reels in all
gauges. Essential Cinema prints and elements are kept in alphabetical
order; other collections are stored in a variety of ways. But no one
knows or remembers what the deal is with the films on shelf #510.
Negatives and positives, these cans have languished on our most
mysterious of shelves for far too long. Tonight we will witness the
unearthing of such whodunits as UNKNOWN NEGATIVE (COLOR) WITH BEES,
CARNIVAL, GEORGE WASHINGTON, PLAYGROUND-OUTTAKES and a truly odd reel of
hairy, naked Eastern Europeans doing what we hope is performance art.
Also on the bill is yet another installment of DOUBLE PROJECTION
  THEATER.

 THE NEW VISION CINEMA PROGRAM
"Continuing in the tradition of the Invisible Film Series, the New
Vision Cinema Series will present a broad range of films and videos from
an equally diverse selection of film and video cineastes, many of whom
are culled from the vast selection of film and video makers who had
formerly comprised the Invisible Film Series. Represented will be works
by such cinema visionaries as Nick Zedd, Mike Kuchar, Nisi Jacobs,
Howard Guttenplan, Tim Reardon and Edward Doty, familiar faces all to
those who frequent Millennium. Also debuting works in this, our premiere
edition of the New Cinema Series, will be filmmakers, Todd Heyman, Kelly
Sebatian, and James Tully. Debuting as well at this presentation will be
a collaborative effort by the show's co-curator, Michael Park, and

founder, Jennifer MacMillan, so please make the effort to attend what is
to be a most engaging launching of a new chapter in this film series."-

(1928, 96 minutes, silent.) Dovzhenko's second film, attacked by Soviet
critics for being so beautifully rendered as to actually lessen its
political impact, remains today a "cinematic poem" as the director named
it. Dovzhenko wrote: "I did not so much make the picture as sing it out
like a songbird." Episodic, folkloric, and allegorical, it is a mythic
search for hidden treasure by two brothers.

enemy's laughing gas – his frozen body still baring its teeth long after
the battle and his life are over.

(1929-30, 82 minutes, silent) A poetic expression of love for both
nature and Ukrainian culture by the man who was alternatively branded a
deserter by Ukrainians and a Ukrainian nationalist by Russian Soviets.
Dovzhenko champions the progression of life, class struggle, and new
attitudes for a town changed by a tractor and a fallen hero.
