SAN FRANCISCO CINEMATHEQUE presents…

FILMS OF MARIE MENKEN

"There is no why for my making films. I just liked the twitters of the machine, and since it
was an extension of painting for me, I tried it and loved it. In painting I never liked the
staid and static, always looked for what would change the source of light and stance,
using glitters, glass beads, luminous paint, so the camera was a natural for me to try – but
how expensive!" (Marie Menken c. 1966)

The San Francisco Cinematheque brings you the rarely seen films of Marie Menken. Her
films playfully divulge the delicate intricacies of the world through the movement of color,
light and texture across the screen. Whirling red lights dance with the cornea in her film
EYE MUSIC IN RED MAJOR, while water in a fountain waltzes with the afternoon light in
ARABESQUE FOR KENNETH ANGER. Her themes move from the frantic work of ants in a
garden (GLIMPSE OF THE GARDEN), to frantic businessmen scurrying in the streets
of New York (GO GO GO). Marie Menken may not have given a "why" for making her
films, but it becomes self evident when her film's exquisite camera-eye discoveries solve
mysteries of wonderment and awe on the screen before you.
