Re: Possible anamorfic format for DVD (Re: Satantango)

1.66:1 is the film format nearest to 16:9 anyway isn't
it? 1.85:1 is more letterboxed than 1.661 on a 16:9
screen.

Movies can be letterboxed even when in anamorphic 16:9
if they are wider than 16:9.

The reasons why there might be a 4:3 version made is
that they may already have a telecine master in pan
and scanned 4:3, perhaps for a VHS release previously.

Alternatively it could be letterboxed 4:3 and the
reason for that might be that a master was made for
VHS for which the master is letterboxed 4:3.

If they are making a new transfer for the DVD it makes
less sense, unless the director intended it to be a
4:3 film and it got released to the cinema in a
widescreen format instead?? *shrug*
