'There is no image - it is black film' - exactly what is being explored with
The Audible Picture Show (audiblepictureshow.org.uk).

Begging the question - do we really need an image?

Next trip to US hopefully Feb 2007 - to Iowa City for "Studies in Sound:
Listening in the Age of Visual Culture" - a graduate student conference.

Could be of interest in this context?

I recommend the Lettrist films, such as Maurice Lemaitre's THE SONG OF RIO
JIM. There is no image - it is black film with music from a Western on the
soundtrack, and the viewer is instructed to image the pictures. The only
indication given is that it is the best film ever imagined or imaginable.
