Herons and egrets are very easy to find in the San Francisco Bay Area. Great egrets and snowy egrets populate fields and wetlands all over. Great blue herons are a little more reclusive, but there are many around. Two or three mating pairs of great blues are currently working on nests in the middle of Stow Lake in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, in preparation for babies that usually show up in the spring. Perhaps someone out here could shoot some stock footage for you.
