Re: Film Job in San Francisco

I've only substitute taught at AAC but what I've heard
is that teaching there is totally by the book, i.e.
teachers do not design their own syllabi or courses
but just recite preordained lesson plans. Maybe I'm
wrong. Some (teachers) are frustrated by this and some
are actually liberated by this, in that it's just "a
job" and not something that becomes a life (some
people don't want this). Just about every filmmaker in
the Bay Area who teaches has done time teaching at
AAC. I've heard the pay is good actually but again, I
don't know what that means but if all you do is clock
in and do a three hour routine, well...

My understanding is that, as far as filmmaking goes,
is that it is more of a trade school, in that you can
specialize in, say, editing and learn current software
backwards and forwards and be competent to get a job,
say cutting tv docs, afterwards. It's not much af an
"art" school but motivated people have made it work
well for them, as motivated people often do.

AAC indeed owes real estate all over SF. They have
converted mid-sized boutique hotels into strange,
highly supervized dorms. I've never been in one tho...

ps: sorry, i think it's called the academy of art
unversity now, not to be confused with sfai or the
mysterious, art institute international of san
francisco, which is something very similar yet
completely different.
