Say what you will about Lacan, I'm not interested in defending him at
all, but I doubt that he is in any way responsible for the way film
theorists of the 1970's applied his work to film. That would be like
blaming cognitive scientists for the completely unscientific and
unrigorous film theory of the 1990's that was "based" on cognitive
science.
