So Sam, are you saying that it's a better idea to rent equipment for a particular project rather than invest in buying something at this point since technology is advancing so quickly?

Honestly I think you'd be better off with a small one chip DV camcoder.

I mean an iPod has a 60 GB drive...
 
Well I'm not getting into drives vs P2 etc - enough of that elsewhere. But miniDV tape works pretty well at the low end, I don't see quite why compromise images just for that camera's "features" It also is not clear if you really have control of aperture etc.
 
You can get into HDV for under $ 2,000 now for that matter. Anyway std def DV cameras will be at fire sale prices before long.
