umn - don't think this is what i was addressing
i was talking about that the elite
"do not give back to the community
it's the old IGMFY(i got mine f*ck you)
maya deren (+ others) worked to help support
the avant garde
beyond making the work (beyond the grave)
why can't these elite
i mean lucas and speilberg
yes speilberg has the shoah foundation (great) but...
is speilburg + "industrial light and magic" "
Does Spielberg even know or care about the A-G? Should he have to? He went
to school desperately wanting to be a mainstream Hollywood director. That
is his right. If we want him to help out the A-G, it's up to non-profit
grant writers to convince him it's a cause he cares about. Why should he
have to educate himself about all the possible filmmakers he could give to
(Beyond Stan Brakhage, you seem to forget)? I don't feel he owes a debt to
the A-G-it did not influence him.
That Scorcese is preserving films he cares about is a huge deal and
shouldn't be underestimated. It seems like most of the money comes from his
pocket, not asking for donations like the rest of our beloved, scrappy film
archives have to. Plus it's not like he's collecting crappy films. He's
got good taste at least.
"i think he gives cash to support preservation
but i was talking about that i believe stan
could have been more supported in his lifetime
and would have benefited moreover
by the community of filmmaking doing so
(not to mention that the community of filmmaking would
have benefited moreover)"
Again, I ask you if you are wealthy, how do you decide who deserves help?
The antiquated Patron system of old Europe doesn't exist unfortunately for
filmmakers. In it's place we have foundation grants funded by wealthy
people looking for a tax break. Unfortunately the funds often seem to go
to the most persistent artists, or the ones who can afford to hire
professional grantwriters. Foundations love to give money to things that
have already been given grants elsewhere--as if its "proven" to be good
without them having to decide for themselves.
But now I'm really off topic.
