We don't do any video transfers in the process of
preservation, except if we need a visual,
frame-accurate reference for doing sound work (to
maintain sync, etc.), or maybe if we've made
arrangements with the owner/filmmaker for some reason.
At this point, for work like this, video is still seen
(by most archives, at least) as an access or maybe
distribution medium, and not something which
specifically benefits the photochemical film work
itself. So for our part, transfers are left up to the
filmmaker/estate/rightsholder to tangle with, since
the end results would generally be a DVD release or
screener tape or something.
As for access, when we preserve a film, we usually end
up with a new negative and two prints, one for
screenings and one to conserve. In the case of Stan's
films, we're making two *negatives* for each film, one
for printing and one for conserving. Plus, we're
making two prints from the printing neg and one from
the conservation neg, so we're generally ending up
with three prints for each film, one of which will be
a "show print" that can be viewed for no charge onsite
or loaned for screenings to other institutions
(provided they still pay the appropriate rental fee to
Canyon or whatever distributor is designated by
Marilyn).
