Just an aside, but an amusing anecdote that will hopefully lighten the mood
around here.
I recently worked on thet set of the film The Producers as the dailies
projectionist. Although I adore Mel Brooks for his early work, I was always
a bit shy about engaging him directly. I was waiting to start, reading,
when he came in and asked what I was reading. It was Elmer Gantry. He
gushed about what a good book and film it was, then asked me in a quite
endearing, kind of patronizing way, "Do you know who Burt Lancaster is?"
(These kids today!)
On the last day of work, I was determined to talk to him and thank him for
his influence on my formative years. He was as big a part of my life as Jim
Henson! I worked up something eloquent to say, and excited as if I was
going to talk to Santa, I waited for the crowd around him to die down. He
saw me and yelled across the room, "Come here!" So I walked up to him,
standing at a normal distance, when he yelled again, "No come here!"
motioning me closer. I was much taller than him. He reached up grabbed me
firmly by the jowls and shook my head rather hard and said "You did good
kid! Thank you." I was so stunned by the fierce face shake and the new
bruises on my cheeks, I blushed, muttered something incoherant and staggered
quickly out of the room.
So that's the story of my brush with greatness...
