Hey fellow New Yorkers--
It's a busy month for A_G screenings what with the NYFF and the Whitney's
Robert Beavers shows. But if you're thinking you'll prioritize your time
and pass on the Walking Picture shows because you've seen some of the films
in the programs, you're making a big mistake.
It's a nice context to revisit films that need a second or third viewing and
less stressful than the exhausting, torrential but necessary year-end round
up that is the 'Views from the Avant-Garde'. For example, Ernie Gehr's
'Precarious Garden' (2004) is a film I've seen I think 3 times now and have
always been hesitant to admit aloud or even to myself, that it was a bit of
a let down. But I realize now it was simply the placement of the films in
previous viewings that made it seem minor--and it's actually a very
interesting film...not just interesting because Ernie Gehr made it.
Anyway, I'm glad Anthology is living up to it's mission to promote
experimental filmmaking no matter what year it was made. I'm thinking the
limitations of only showing premieres or one-person retrospectives is not
the best way to go.
As if you asked for my opinion,
Jennifer Fieber
