For Cari Machet:
oh what's her name - oh yes - LESLIE THORNTON
made an "archival footage" film
-don't remember the name-
The film by Leslie Thornton that you were using as an analogy is Another Worldy. I think it is insensitive of you to use a film that you can’t even name properly to draw similarities to composition in red and yellow. And if you must know, Leslie Thornton’s work has always aimed to be provocative in terms of challenging the viewer to draw conclusions - using archival footage, or even self shot material - to explore ethnographic and cultural boundaries.
of african and asian people of color
and didn't in any way appropriate it
just "edited" it all 2gether
slapped on some tunes
She perfectly knew well what she was doing, and it comes across quite clear, making the viewer feel uncomfortable while at the same time enjoying the synchronization of sound and image. That was the whole point of the film, to parallel what it was to objectify people of color.
i think the people were exploited all the more
all the while in discussion at a film showing
she is spouting gabaldigook about nothing of
consequence re: HER use
in all her white guy glory - lincoln center et al
she in no way could see
the periphery
of what she was doing
Her father worked on the Atomic bomb, and this has had a great influence on her work. Leslie’s use of image and sound in all her films explore the consequences of her father’s involvement in this act * destruction and apocalypse. The role that she chooses to take in most of her films attempt to challenge the viewer in such ways.
