Dear Anna,
The Association of Moving Image Archivists has a Hurricane Task Force and a group of preservationists specifically to assist with flood-damaged motion picture material. I am forwarding your email now to AMIA preservationists in your area; in the meantime it's important that you don't let the film dry out, if it's soggy, keep it wet. Do NOT attempt to rewash or rinse it off yourself, this needs to be done professionally at a lab.

If there are any other folks on this list with film collections damaged by Katrina, PLEASE contact us at AMIA for assistance and recovery information. For those with damaged non-film collections also, there is information on the AMIA site at:
http://www.amia.typepad.com/

Information on Federal recovery aid is at:

Subject: 16mm org. flooded footage (Katrina)

Is there someone in this group who is a film conservator or who can direct
me to a conservator of film? Any ideas or leads about the following would
be appreciated:

I have approximately 2,500 feet of 16mm film (1950's color and black and
white home movies) that was retrieved from a Katrina flooded storage bin in
a house on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Anyone have any experience with
flooded original footage?

I am interested in speaking to someone who is knowledgeable about
restoring, saving a part of, or just giving up on this soggy footage.

Thanks,
Anna O'Cain
