Re: FLEX tours the East coast (!!!).

The FLEX tour kicked off with a bang here in Wilmington last night. I was
genuinely surprised by the enthusiastic student response to the program, and
I think it points to a positive future for experimental film programming in
Wilmington. A few students even came up to the FLEX folks, Lisa Danker and
Mike Stoltz, asking more questions about how to put shows together.

Lisa and Mike are finishing their undergraduate work at University of
Florida, and I believe some of our students were inspired by the DIY
sensibility they exemplified. Lisa and Mike packed up their car with a
self-sufficient projection bundle (video and 16mm, and speakers) and hit the
road. Support for FLEX and the tour has come partially from the University,
Florida (directly and indirectly) but a lot of it seems to have come from
benefit concerts and other means of raising funds. So hopefully they will
continue to inspire folks who might wonder if it is worth it to fight for
the resources to project film on film.

The show inspired me as well, and reminded me how moot some of our threads
are (including my posts) when we argue video vs. film. The show is a great
mixture of aesthetic positions, and Lisa and Mike both understand the value
of lugging the 16mm projector along (they could transfer everything to
video, if the artists approved), but at the same time they do not play the
film v. video card at all. In the Q&A, Lisa's favorite was a film, Mike's
favorite was a video. When it comes down to it students (or those
interested outside of universities) will come to understand these values,
assuming of course that they have access to the options. Many will work
hard to get access to those options, and will work hard to bring those
options to others as well (to the point of packing up their car and hitting
the road).

So, hats off to the FLEX folks, including those back home in Florida. The
Lord helps those who help themselves. I look forward to updating Lisa and
Mike about the influence this screening will have on developing the film
culture here in Wilmington.
