Winsor McCay was a cartoonist for the New York Post (i
think) who started making hand drawn films in the
early 1900's based off his cartoons . his best know
film is probably "gertie the trained dinosaur" made in
1909. he also made a film called "Little Nemo" which
took 4 years to make.
