BRITISH ARTISTS’ FILM AND VIDEO STUDY COLLECTION

New on the Study Collection website

ONLINE EXHIBITIONS
The Study Collection is pleased to announce its new series of Online
Exhibitions.
'Defining Filmaktion' curated by Lucy Reynolds explores the origins,
objectives and output of the 1970s film and performance
artists who exhibited together as Filmaktion. The exhibition includes
over thirty rare images and documents relating to the work
of William Raban, Annabel Nicolson, Malcolm Le Grice and Gill Eatherley
among others.
'Image is Everything' curated by Esther Johnson investigates the ways
that film and video artists have represented their moving
image work through defining still images. Over forty images are
featured, representing the wide range and variety of British
Artists’ film and video works.
This series of Online Exhibitions has been made possible with the
assistance of the Arts Council of England.
RESEARCH PAPERS
The Study Collection is happy to publish academics’ and artists’
research papers relating to British artists' film and video. Two
recently submitted papers are now online.
'Story, Script and the Spaces in Between' by Sarah Turner considers the
unfulfilled potential of script to explore repetition and
variation, rhythm, musicality and above all, abstraction.
'An Analysis of the soundtrack in the work of Malcolm Le Grice' in which
Orlene Denice McMahon redresses the relative lack
of consideration of the manipulation and function of sound in
avant-garde film concentrating in particular on Malcolm Le Grice's
work.
STUDY COLLECTION CATALOGUES
The website also contains comprehensive catalogues of the Study
Collection’s holdings of materials available to researchers,
including artists’ video, image and document collections, a complete
list of all publications, magazines and artists' monographs
and links to information about artists' film and video organizations and
events.
DATABASE OF KNOWN ARTISTS AND WORKS
The searchable database aims to provide information about all known film
and video artists' works to 2000.
VISIT US
The Study Collection is open by appointment for postgraduate, doctorate
research and to independent researchers and
curators.

on video, or that Barney's sub-Fellini fantasy worlds
(and I don't even like Fellini), are somehow

this month at Malba (in buenos aires) theres a program
of Warhol curated by Mary Lea Bandy and Klaus
Biesenbach of MoMA that consists of a bunch of his
screen tests and sleep, kiss, blow job, eat, empire
projected -on dvd- in a gallery on some kind of
canvas, imitating a sort "picture in motion". !!!
what is the point of doing something as stupid (and
unattractive) as this? this people thinks that this
digitalization-installation legitimates artists like
Warhol or Frampton?
what´s worst is that some peolple go and see 10
minutes of Empire or Sleep and thinks they´re capable
of judging it.

i paid alot for my education it hopefully at least
gave me the standing to be able to critically analyze
art work without it being considered "kvetching out
of the blue" (or "bitching" for the non-yiddish
speakers) -
at the art institute of chicago (and other places i
went) we had critiques lots of them whereby individual
taste discussions got us to the common issues and the
uncommon - it was sort of the point - as there, the
rest of the world is either full of lazy people,
unintelligent people, or fear based thinkers - james
was having trouble with that i think and i was
agreeing with him - this is tuchlus (or "purpose" for
the non-yiddish speakers) enough i think

Many of these installation artists are working to destroy the myth of genius
and the myth of art in general. In this way I sometimes think when the work
is bad it is supposed to somehow negate being lumped into the tradition of
fine art. I know many video artists loathe the idea of the classical and
modernity (and many don't). Granted most installation art is terrible, but so is
most of all art.
While a few examples are time based in a traditional film sense, other
examples operate on another level... the minimalist, Judd/ Turrel/ Irwin sense,
where the time it takes you to move your eyes around the room makes it a "time"
based art. Most of the installation artists I know came out of painting/
installation/ sculpture (pre stardom but having some sucess).
I should say I've also seen many video installations that were brilliant in
the traditional fine art sense. For these artists the room just opens up a
host of possibilities.
But personally I don't see it as the film tradition being destroyed or
resuscitated. I see it as a completely different genre. I think artists and
curators who show films in this context are film lovers that want film to be seen
in any high profile venue (and any form) they can get.
What I personally don't like about most video installation (and some film)
art is the rapidity of the imagery or form/ the lack of attention span. This
mood has already been so thoroughly absorbed by television commercials that I
can often think of nothing else.
Viola vs. Brakhage? One is underground and one is mainstream new york fine
art. But I agree filmmakers need to create more opportunities for their work to
be seen. I think colleges are a good venue... as in an artist lecturing
with a body of work and discussing their influences.

care with its materials, however limited.

Speak of the devil. Pipilotti Rist's video projection Homo Sapiens Sapiens
on the cover of art in america this month. A child's face is projected onto
the ceiling of a church in Venice... viewers laying on the floor.
(I saw her lecture a year ago. I think she is one of the few who has the
capacity to make great video installations).
Also an article about the Venice Biennale: caption heading... Some politics,
Some Installations, Lots of Video.
