I have heard a story about Kubelka and his martial arts many times while
working at Anthology. I'm not how much has become exaggerated for the sake
of a good story, but I believe he was quite accomplished in (I think it is)
judo?--even holding titles in NYC. But the best part of the story comes
during the years when Anthology still had the Invisible Cinema seats
installed. There were strict rules that you couldn't enter once the film
had started because you'd disrupt everyone else's experience. Kubelka was
outside the door when some rather large latecomer starting getting
belligerent about the policy and decided he was going to force his way past
the doors. I guess Kubelka sprang to action and "flipped" they guy to the
floor to stop him. The guy was enormous, got up kind of stunned but not
sure exactly what happened and tried a second time to go in, where he was
"flipped" again. Finally he gave up and left.

Maybe someone can confirm this story who was witness? I've always loved the
visual image, but it does seem rather Paul Bunyon-like.
