I'd love to see Canyon use on-line clips to preview films.
This is one of the things I've enjoyed about the VDB site. Descriptions
alone are not enough, in fact can be deceptive. I remember reading old
issues of Canyon Cinema News from the 1970s and filmmakers were talking
about allowing preview prints to be sent out to institutions. The idea was
that bad choices can turn people off and thwart return business. I've
certainly picked films that in the end I did not include in selected
programs. It's a costly mistake to make for a group in our position - no
budget!
Only trouble is it would probably be a small part of the collection, since
it depends on those who have video copies available. I hope the numbers
would be better than Dominic's figure of 50 filmmakers out of 350
contribute to 50% of Canyon's earned income (that's a mere 14% of the
total catalogue). Maybe half of the catalogue's films could have
clips...it would certainly help. I'd rent more prints if it wasn't such a
gamble...besides (I would speculate) more films outside the canon (as is
evidenced by what gets rented) would see the light of day (of the
projector I mean).
