Sad but true in my experience. A venue or screening series has to attach
itself to a swirling art party to make any money from the door take.
Simple, salon style screenings won't cut the mustard.

The suggestion I get most from folks both inside and outside the AG
community is to "sell beer". Maybe this is the same everywhere, but it's
the most often suggested pancea here in Portland.
I can empathsize with Dominic's grumblings about what people are willing
to pay for a play or jazz band, but not for films of a similar nature.
I've posted these very same sentiment here before on Frameworks. There is
the possibility that selling beer could extract from folks 2-3x what you
could expect from the door. You often have to lower the door price but the
beer sales would likely get you more than you could expect from a $7
admission price. I'll do it if I can find a bartender who wants to work
for free and a brewery who will donate beer indenfinitely.
