In Paris, Brakhage rentals are way up. Brakhage has been one of the
top five rented filmmakers over the past five years. The "By
Brakhage" video is not the benchmark here: I released three Brakhage
videos starting in 1995. There have been major events around Brakhage
here every couple of years since then, and of course many
retrospectives and articles and mentions on television around the
time of his death. All this contributes to Brakhage's notoriety, and
maybe why Criterion chose to release his films in the first place, a
symptom of his popularity and not a cause. Only a handful of us
publishers are crazy enough to focus on lesser known artists.
